Influential Women Features Mary Kesselring: Advocating For Students, Wildlife, And Community

WESTMINSTER, MD, UNITED STATES, October 6, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A Career Defined by Education, Compassion, Conservation, and Service

Westminster, Maryland – Mary Kesselring, PhD, is a retired special education educator, researcher, conservation advocate, and community leader whose life’s work has centered on supporting individuals with special needs and protecting vulnerable populations, both human and wildlife alike. With 26 years of experience, she has dedicated her career to education, advocacy, and meaningful community service.

Mary’s passion for education began while working as a substitute teacher in Carroll County, where she discovered a talent for creating individualized learning materials and support systems that helped struggling students improve their confidence and performance. She went on to spend more than 15 years as a special education teacher with Howard County Public Schools, developing innovative teaching strategies to help students with diverse learning needs achieve academic success. Throughout her teaching career, she became known for her creativity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to helping every student reach their full potential.

Driven by a desire to better understand and advocate for students with disabilities, Mary earned a Master’s degree in Secondary Education from McDaniel College, along with certification in special education, before pursuing a PhD in Special Education from National University. She also holds a B.A. in International Politics and Foreign Service from Penn State. Her doctoral research focused on the mental health needs of teenagers with autism and intellectual disabilities, inspired by her firsthand experiences in the classroom.

Mary’s research highlighted critical gaps in support services for neurodivergent students and reinforced her longstanding belief that educational systems must provide more individualized and evidence-based approaches to meet the unique needs of these learners. In her work, she championed creative interventions, including hands-on learning activities, music-based engagement, and animal-assisted approaches that helped students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Known by many as “The Monarch Whisperer,” Mary’s advocacy extends well beyond education. She is an active conservationist and community activist dedicated to protecting Maryland’s farmland, rural communities, and endangered wildlife habitats. She has become a leading voice in efforts to oppose high-tension power line projects that threaten agricultural land and monarch butterfly migration corridors. Mary has personally raised and released hundreds of monarch butterflies, reflecting her deep commitment to protecting wildlife and preserving vulnerable habitats.

Her dedication to service also extends to supporting charitable organizations focused on wildlife rescue, military families, and veterans. Her involvement with organizations such as STOP MPRP, Fortress of the Bear, and Tunnel to Towers reflects her commitment to helping others and contributing to causes she believes matter.

Mary attributes her success to her dad, who encouraged her interest in politics and debate and supported her interests from a young age. His advice that it was okay to “march to the beat of a different drummer” became an important influence in her life. She carries that independent spirit into her advice for young women entering her industry, encouraging them to have patience and not be afraid to stand up for what is right for their students.

Mary believes one of the biggest challenges in education today is that school administrators and policymakers make decisions that do not benefit student learning or parental rights or concerns. Her perspective is shaped by years of direct experience supporting students with diverse learning needs and researching the challenges faced by neurodivergent teenagers.

At the heart of Mary’s professional and personal life are compassion and love for all life. From developing individualized educational approaches to raising monarch butterflies and supporting community causes, her work reflects a consistent commitment to helping vulnerable populations. Her journey as an educator, researcher, conservation advocate, and community leader continues to demonstrate the meaningful impact that patience, perseverance, compassion, and a willingness to stand up for others can have.
