Transit Driver Sheila Wimbush Recognized Statewide for Exceptional Service
Frederick, Md. –Transit Services of Frederick County is proud to announce that Transit Driver Sheila Wimbush has been named the 2026 Driver of the Year by the Transportation Association of Maryland (TAM). Sheila was formally recognized at this year’s annual TAM Conference for her exceptional professionalism, dedication, and compassion, qualities that shine every day in the community she serves.
"Sheila is deeply admired by her riders, respected by her colleagues, and trusted by her supervisors", said Roman Steichen, Director of Transit Services. "Her commitment to safety, service, and integrity embodies the very best of public transportation. On any given day, Sheila can be found greeting riders with a smile, running her routes with unwavering reliability, and stepping in wherever she’s needed, often long before anyone asks."
Driving an average of 50 to 60 hours each week, Sheila’s work ethic is matched only by her genuine heart. She consistently arrives prepared, punctual, and organized, ensuring smooth operations and dependable service for our community. She takes initiative beyond her assigned duties, frequently offering support to keep routes covered and operations running seamlessly. As a mentor, she shares her decades of experience with new drivers, offering guidance with patience and positivity.
Her dedication was never clearer than during a winter weather event last January. While preparing for her route, Sheila noticed a small child fall into the icy water of Carroll Creek. Without hesitation, she acted, alerting others, retrieving the child, and helping the family inside the Transit Center to get warm, dry, and safely on their way. Her quick thinking and compassion prevented what could have been a tragic outcome, reminding all of us how profoundly transit workers contribute to the daily safety of our community.
Sheila also represented Frederick County Transit at the 2026 Roadeo competition, earning 9th place for her careful, safe driving. She trained tirelessly for the event, often arriving early, staying late, and practicing on her days off, another example of her commitment to excellence.
In every way, Sheila models accountability, professionalism, and service. Her zero preventable incidents, her unwavering reliability, and her thoughtful approach to rider needs set a standard that uplifts our entire team. Our community is stronger because of her.
We are honored to celebrate Sheila’s remarkable achievements and grateful for all she brings to Frederick County Transit Services each day.
